Are you feeling more tired than usual or struggling to sleep more restlessly than normal? Maybe your periods have become irregular, or you no longer feel quite the same. If you are in your 40s, these changes may be related to menopause.

Perimenopause is a natural process. This does not mean that the symptoms will be easy to deal with. Your body can feel physically and emotionally unstable because of these changes.

Understanding what is happening in your body and taking the right steps can make all the difference in how perimenopause affects you. Our experts at Solene Aesthetics & Wellness Studio aim to educate women about their wellness needs and provide them with the best options that suit their preferences.

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is a period during which your body starts to prepare for menopause. In this stage, your body’s ovaries start to produce less hormone, which results in irregular periods. Your body starts preparing for the possibility of being unable to conceive anymore. It should be noted that all these changes are normal, but not all of them might be pleasant for you.

This change usually occurs in the 40s, but some women may see it earlier. The change into perimenopause may last for several years and can be different for each woman.

Menopause and perimenopause are two different phases.  The set of irregularities in the menstrual cycle marks the beginning of perimenopause. This phase is said to be completed after a year of amenorrhea.

What Are the Common Perimenopause Symptoms?

The symptoms of perimenopause can’t be the same for each woman. Some women may only have mild issues, and some women may have serious issues that impact their lives.

The most commonly reported symptoms of perimenopause include:

  • Irregular periods:

Periods that last longer or shorter than normal.

  • Hot flashes:

Suddenly feeling hot in bed at night or waking up soaked in sweat.

  • Insomnia:

Having trouble sleeping because of night sweats.

  • Mood swings:

Being more irritable and depressed than usual.

  • Concentration problems

Being unable to focus and remember things like before.

  • Restlessness:

Feeling tired throughout the day because of lack of sleep and other symptoms.

Perimenopause can’t look the same for all women. Some women are affected by severe symptoms that are negatively impacting their quality of life. There are many severe symptoms associated with perimenopause, including:

Problems with the thyroid gland, anemia, stress, and certain medications can be other reasons why a woman may experience the symptoms of perimenopause. A health care provider can help identify other possible causes once these symptoms begin to affect a woman’s daily life.

Why Perimenopause is More than a Hormonal Transition?

Perimenopause is a critical period during which the female body changes. The misconception here is that perimenopause occurs only due to shifting hormone levels. This is not the truth; this process will affect almost every activity a woman performs daily. Estrogen levels decrease, which directly affects brain function.

Additionally, with declining estrogen levels, women will experience decreases in their metabolic rates and bone density. As a result, if women wish to remain healthy, they should concentrate on improving their health. Handling such dramatic changes can be very difficult and overwhelming. Most women suffer from some form of anxiety due to the fast changes occurring within their bodies.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) During Perimenopause

In the process of perimenopause, many women tend to suffer from symptoms like hot flashes, inability to sleep, change in mood, period problems, and mental haziness. There are mild symptoms and very disturbing symptoms in their lives in general, including at work, in relationships, and in life itself.

While HRT is one of the best forms of treatment for many of the symptoms associated with perimenopause, HRT is often misunderstood by many women due to its types:

There are two types of hormone therapies:

  1. Estrogen only:
Estrogen is the primary hormone used in hormone therapy. Sometimes it is called estrogen therapy.
  2. Combined hormone therapy:
You need both estrogen and progesterone if you still have a uterus. Progestin can help in reducing the risk of uterine cancer that can occur when estrogen is used alone. Adding progestin may also improve hot flashes.

Hormone therapy directly replaces the decreasing levels of estrogen and progesterone. It will lower the effect of hot flashes and night sweats. To avoid vaginal dryness and osteoporosis, it is the best therapy.

What Can Be Done To Help During Perimenopause?

Perimenopause can affect mood and overall well-being. A few lifestyle changes and the right medical support can help make this transition easier.

  1. Eat a nutritious diet: Make sure your meals include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, and calcium-rich foods.
  2. Exercise: Physical exercise like yoga and strength training will keep your bones healthy and your sleep patterns regulated.
  3. Improve sleeping patterns: Establish a bedtime routine and make sure your room is not too warm to help control hot flashes at night.
  4. Reduce stress: Use relaxation methods, meditate, and spend some time doing what you like.
  5. Consider hormonal therapy: Consider hormone therapy when necessary regarding any severe symptoms you may have.

Your Experience of Perimenopause is Worth Considering
